Bluebirds & BeeKeeping Class at Sonnenberg |
| |
Learn about the birds and the bees – bluebirds and beekeeping, that is – at an all-day (9:30 a.m. – 3:30 pm) educational seminar in the Carriage House meeting room at Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park in Canandaigua on Saturday, Jan. 30.
The morning session, “Bees in Peril,” will feature local beekeepers Richard Reidman and Sam Hall, with a combined 35 years of experience in the industry. As beekeeping has historically played a major role in the production of our fruits and vegetables, this important industry is now in peril. Reidman and Hall will be displaying and discussing the equipment and tools of the trade as well as its interesting history.
Learn how honey is produced, the various types of honey, and related products. Find out how our food crops are pollinated, how bee colonies collapse and other significant problems that threaten this industry and what is being done to meet those challenges.
The afternoon session, “Bluebirds of Happiness,” will feature John Rogers of Brewerton, NY, known as “Mr. NY State Bluebird.” Rogers co-founded the NYS Bluebird Society and has fledged over 11,000 bluebirds. He currently monitors 250 bluebird nest boxes along a 50 mile stretch of land.
His power point presentation features excellent photos and graphics on our state bird and its historic battle to overcome extinction. Learn about the bluebird’s nesting cycles, migration, habitat and feeding needs, insect food sources, and the problems and predators it faces. Rogers will also display and discuss various nest boxes, their placement, and management and will describe his experiences in helping to restore bluebird populations in central New York.
Reservations are $10/person, or $8/ Sonnenberg members, and the seminar cost includes hot soup and a beverage served at the 12:30 lunch hour (bring a sandwich, if desired).
For more information or to make your reservation, call (585) 394-4922 during business hours (9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. M- F).
Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park is one of America’s longest surviving estates from the Victorian Era. The elegant Queen Anne-style mansion was built in 1887 in Canandaigua by New York City financier Frederick Ferris Thompson, and his wife, Mary Clark Thompson, as a summer home. Between 1901 and 1920, the widowed Mrs. Thompson and her staff created the nine formal gardens seen today. The grounds are open to the public from mid-May through early October each year. Sonnenberg is a non-profit organization dependent upon the support of members and sponsors and its dedicated corps of volunteers. For more information on the revival of the grand estate on the “sunny hill,” contact Executive Director David Hutchings at (585) 396-7433.
