MTV: Story Of "Banned" Gaga Video "Falsely Reported"
MTV wants to clear up a rumor that spread over the weekend after the debut of Lady Gaga's new "Telephone" video. The network's Executive Vice President of Music and Talent, Amy Doyle, says the video is currently in rotation, despite a rumor that it had been banned. Doyle says, quote, "MTV did not ban Lady Gaga and Beyonce's 'Telephone' video -- in fact, we premiered it on Friday, March 12th, on-air and online at MTV.com, two days before this story was falsely reported." According to MTV.com, the rumor of the video being banned originated from a Sunday morning segment on CNN. Anchor Fredricka Whitfield made a statement about MTV airing the video without citing a source. She said, quote, "[The video] is so strong, so suggestive, so sexual, so violent as well, that MTV has said, 'We're not even going to air this, so it has banned the airing of this video.'"
Gaga and Beyonce's "Telephone" video began airing on MTV at 12:30 a.m. Friday, an hour after its "E! News" premiere. It began running Friday morning in its entirety as part of the network's "Lady Gaga Artist Collection." The ten-minute video features a variety of controversial images, pop culture references, nudity, curse words, and violence. It also features guest stars like actor Tyrese Gibson and Jai Rodriguez of "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" fame. |
