Big Star Frontman Dies
Big Star frontman Alex Chilton has died. The Memphis "Commercial Appeal" says the veteran rocker, who began his musical career as the teenage lead singer for The Box Tops, passed away at a hospital in New Orleans Wednesday. Chilton's longtime friend John Fry tells the paper that earlier in the day Chilton said he wasn't feeling well, and paramedics were called. They took him to the hospital, where he died in the emergency room. Chilton was 59.
Chilton first made his mark as The Box Tops' vocalist, and is heard on such hits as hits "The Letter" and "Cry Like a Baby." At the time of his death he was still musically active with Big Star. The band was slated to perform this weekend at the South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Surviving Big Star members haven't announced yet if they'll still perform as scheduled on Saturday. |
