19 Dead In Mass Panic At German Music Festival
At least 19 people are dead and over 340 have been left injured after panic broke out Saturday during a music festival in Germany. Police say overcrowding at an entrance gate to the "Love Parade" techno music festival sparked a stampede at the event in the western city of Duisburg. Ambulances rushed to pick up victims while police set up an emergency first aid station near the entrance gate. The "BBC" reports German Chancellor Angela Merkel is now demanding an "intensive" investigation into what caused the Love Parade's stampede and says she is "appalled" at how the event turned deadly. The music festival's organizers say they will not put on the event ever again. The annual event was first held in Berlin in 1989. This year's event in Duisburg was expected to draw more than one-million people. One of the headliners was to have been French DJ David Guetta, whose music freqently tops the U.S. charts and features artists such as the Black Eyed Peas and Madonna.
