Radiohead Drummer Going Solo
Phil Selway may be one of Radiohead's most unrecognizable members, tucked away behind the drumkit at most shows. But the musician is changing that with his new solo album, "Familial." Selway tells Pitchfork.com, quote, "I've been playing guitar and writing songs since I was 15, but I started really thinking about making an album around four years ago. But I didn't know I'd sing on it. I didn't feel I had a convincing voice at that point. It took four years of trial and error to find out the stretches I could make." Selway says he found himself very vulnerable testing out his voice, but eventually discovered a comfort level.
As for the album title, Selway says it refers to his family life growing up. He explains, quote, "Every family has their eccentricities, and you pass them on down through the generations. When you see the potential for the less functional side of yourself coming out in your kids, it's unnerving. There's a sense that you have to actually resolve something within yourself." Selway's "Familial" will be released August 31st. |
