Sir Paul McCartney Among 2010 Kennedy Center Honorees
Sir Paul McCartney will be among an elite group of honorees at the Kennedy Center this year. The former Beatle, along with media mogul Oprah Winfrey, composer and lyricist Jerry Herman, country music legend Merle Haggard, and choreographer and director Bill T. Jones will be celebrated at the 33rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors in December. The honors will be presented on December 4th at a State Department dinner, hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The following evening, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will receive the Honorees at the White House prior to a star-studded gala performance to be held at the Kennedy Center Opera House. CBS will broadcast taped highlights of the gala performance on Tuesday, December 28th at 9:00 pm Eastern. The Kennedy Center Honors recognize recipients for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts. Honorees are selected by the Center's Board of Trustees. McCartney is joining a list of music notables who've received this honor at Washington DC's Kennedy Center since its inception in the late-1970s. Other recipients have included The Who's Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend; Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys; Sir Elton John; rock n' roll pioneer Chuck Berry; rocker Bruce Springsteen; and Motown legend Smokey Robinson.
